Lake Mburo National Park in southwestern Uganda is a compact yet diverse savanna destination, known for its accessibility, abundant wildlife, and unique activities that set it apart from larger parks, making it an excellent stop for travelers en route to gorilla trekking areas.

Diverse Wildlife and Birdlife

As Uganda’s smallest savanna national park, it hosts over 68 mammal species, including the country’s largest populations of Burchell’s zebra, impala (found nowhere else in Uganda), eland, topi, buffalo, and recently introduced giraffes. Leopards are a highlight, especially on night drives, along with hippos, crocodiles, and smaller predators like hyenas.

It’s also a birdwatcher’s haven with over 350 species, including rare shoebills and African finfoots, thriving around the park’s 14 lakes and wetlands.

Unique Activities and Experiences

Visitors can enjoy classic game drives (day and night) for spotting wildlife, but the park shines with unconventional options like horseback safaris, cycling tours, and guided nature walks—rare in Uganda due to the relative absence of dangerous predators in many areas, allowing closer encounters on foot. Boat cruises on Lake Mburo offer intimate views of hippos, crocodiles, and water birds, providing a serene contrast to land-based adventures.

Accessibility and Convenience

Just a 3-4 hour drive from Kampala, it’s the most accessible national park, ideal for short visits or as a stopover between Entebbe and western Uganda’s attractions like Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. Its compact size (about 370 sq km) means you can experience a full safari in a day, with fewer crowds and a more intimate feel compared to busier parks.
