Semuliki National Park in Uganda is a standout destination for nature lovers, offering a unique blend of biodiversity, serene landscapes, and cultural immersion in a less-touristed setting.

Rich Biodiversity and Wildlife

As Uganda’s only true lowland tropical rainforest and an extension of the Congo’s Ituri Forest, the park boasts strong Central African influences, making it a haven for unique species not commonly found elsewhere in East Africa. It hosts over 441 bird species (including 35 endemic to the region and representing about 40% of Uganda’s total birds), 15 primate species like chimpanzees, baboons, and various monkeys, plus elephants, leopards, and forest buffalo. Additionally, there are around 300 butterfly species and 235 moth species, adding to its appeal for eco-tourists and photographers.

Prime Birdwatching and Hot Springs

Semuliki is renowned as one of Uganda’s top birdwatching spots, with half of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s bird species present here—the only lowland montane forest in East Africa. The iconic Sempaya Hot Springs are a must-see natural wonder, where boiling water shoots up from the ground, creating a mystical geothermal experience you can even use to cook eggs or plantains on-site.

Cultural and Adventure Experiences

The park offers cultural encounters with the indigenous Bamaga and Bakonjo communities, including guided forest walks and visits to traditional villages. Activities like chimpanzee tracking, night game drives, and hiking through the rainforest provide adventure without the crowds of more popular parks, ensuring a peaceful, authentic escape from civilization.
